It’s been more than 50 years since The O’Jays formed in Canton, Ohio, but the R&B legends are still going strong, with two of its original five members still performing. The trio—Walter Williams, Eddie Levert, who both formed the band in 1958, and Eric Grant, who joined in the ’90s—will be at Jones Beach tonight, opening for Maze and Frankie Beverly.
The O’Jays performed as a five-piece throughout the ’60s, but it was as a trio, after original members Bill Isles and Bobby Massey left the group, that they had their greatest success. Their 1972 album, Back Stabbers, spawned several hits including the title track and “Love Train,” which reached the top of the Billboard pop chart. The group, who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, had many more hits throughout the ’70s, including my personal favorite, “I Love Music.” Check out a video of that song being performed by the band on Soul Train below.
