Jenai Cutcher West helps launch Alternative Speakers Bureau

In a kind of spinoff of the TED paradigm, the Alternative Speakers Bureau was organized by Mica and Noah Scalin to tap “artists as a resource for solving the world’s problems,” or at least help organizations be inspired to find creative solutions to whatever dilemmas they might be facing. Tonight at 7pm, the Bureau will be celebrating their launch with a party in Bar 82’s back room. The event will not only feature Brazilian music spun by DJ Honey, but a host of speakers from the Bureau’s roster, including Jenai Cutcher West, a  dancer, writer and filmmaker from Columbus. West, who received her MFA in Dance from OSU, is a tap dancer who has performed with with Brenda Bufalino, Savion Glover, Derick Grant, Lynn Schwab, Rumba Tap, Ritmico, and Tap City. She also writes about dance for such publications as Dance Magazine and The Village Voice and has three books under her belt. In addition, she directed Thinking on Their Feet, a documentary on the women who reinvented tap-dancing in the ’70 and ’80s that has been shown at the Southern Utah International Film Festival and Newfilmmakers Film Festival.

Jenai will be joined at the launch party by a human beatbox, a sword swallower, an actress, and a musician, so the evening should be quite the spectacle.
