Tonight, James Englebeck (a.k.a. DJ Violet Times), along with Flash Gordon, will be manning the turntables at Daddy’s (435 Graham Avenue). James grew up in Marblehead, Ohio (near Sandusky and Put-in-Bay) and spent a spell in Columbus before moving to Brooklyn by way of Portland. He’s responsible for the Violet Times record label, on which he issued the great Mirrors release from a couple year ago, Something That Would Never Do. (James has a blog of the same name that is linked over there to the right, in the blogroll.) He also put out an equally excellent album by New Zealand’s Cakekitchen, Kangaroos in My Top Paddock, last year. He and Flash Gordon will be focusing on the Kiwis as they spin records in honor of Flying Nun’s 30th anniversary.
